A ‘typical mix’ of spring weather, says the Met Office, will mark the run up to Easter with showers, heavier rain, wind and some sunny spells all in the mix.
Meteorologists say they are trying to work out the finer details of the Easter forecast itself, but early indications are that the four-day bank holiday weekend will bring with it a similar mix of weather.
Good Friday, says the Met Office, is likely to see another day of blustery showers, with these expected to be more frequent in southern and western areas.
Saturday, suggests the long-range forecast, will see those showers continue in southern and western areas with a chance of brighter spells for those living further north and east.
Some warmer temperatures however, could also be on the horizon.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: “Showers will continue into the weekend, especially for southern and western areas. However, it is likely that we will see something of an improvement for most areas, with the showers tending to be less frequent, and a better chance of longer spells of sunshine for eastern and northern areas in particular.
“It will also become less windy, and temperatures should start to trend upwards, feeling quite warm in any sunshine.”
While unsettled conditions are likely to be the main theme for much of the next week, says the Met Office, close attention is being paid to the amount of rain likely to fall, after what has been a mild but very wet winter.
Any signs of snow however, it adds, will likely be confined to higher ground in parts of Scotland, which is not unusual for the time of year.
Mark Sidaway added: “It’s another very unsettled week for much of the UK, with heavy, blustery showers, longer spells of rain and also some strong winds.”
“In terms of hazards in the current forecast, we’re continuing to keep an eye on some of the expected rainfall totals as they build up through the week, with some places in the south still quite sensitive to rainfall amounts due to the wet winter many have experienced.”
With the start of spring coinciding with the first bank holiday weekend of 2024, there is added interest in this week’s forecasts.
More detailed, regional, predictions for the weather expected over the Easter break will be available closer to Friday, added the Met Office, which it will also share on its website, social media channels and via its app.
