A charity which provides disabled dogs with wheelchairs has been boosted with a donation from a Whitstable businesswoman.
Michelle Burgess, who runs an online firm selling merchandise for dog lovers, Scruffy Little Terrier, chose Winston's Wheels as her charity of the year and has already donated the cost of a wheelchair for a dog.
She chose the charity after hearing that Rachel Wettner had set it up because her dog Winston had an inoperable spinal tumour and couldn't use his back legs.
She set up Winston's Wheels after a complete stranger loaned her a wheelchair for the nine-year-old Staffie, and she realised the struggle other pet owners also faced.
She has donated £450 from sales over the last six months.
Michelle, who owns two terriers, said “The thought of anything happening to my two that leaves them unable to go out for walks and play, is heartbreaking. I heard about Winston’s Wheels and wanted to do something to help. The work that Rachel does helping people who’s dogs have been ill or suffered injury is amazing. At a time when charities are struggling, I wanted to do something to try and help.
"What Rachel does for dogs and their owners, who are sometimes given the only option of putting their precious dog to sleep, is absolutely inspiring. Because of Rachel’s work, these dogs have many more happy times, sometimes years, using a stroller or wheelchair and can get out and about, enjoying life to the fullest."
Winston’s Wheels has helped 29 dogs with strollers and 50 dogs with wheelchairs so far this year and overall more than 300 dogs, including three from Kent.
Rachel, who is based in Suffolk, said: “As you can imagine getting the word out about our charity, Winston’s Wheels has made us very busy. "This is why help from our supporters and small businesses like, Scruffy Little Terrier, is really appreciated, it means we can help to keep more dogs mobile and enjoy life with their families.”
