More than three million households have added a pet to their family since last March - taking the number of pet-owning homes in the country to an estimated 17 million.

But when considering a new furry friend - and in particular a canine companion - there are so many things to take into account in finding the perfect match - from their age, history and activity levels to whether they'll suit the personalities of those already in your family.

But one factor which you may not have previously considered is how compatible a new dog could be with your star sign!

Astrologists believe that our star sign can determine some of our characteristics, so could choosing a pooch who is compatible with them mean your match is perfectly aligned? Psychic, astrologist, and tarot reader Inbaal believes so.

He says: "Dog breeds have their own likes and dislikes, and different star signs have unique characteristics. It's best if they fit well together."

And while you should always prioritise far more important considerations such as your experience, size of your garden, your time constraints and how suitable your lifestyle is when it comes to welcoming a new pet - taking a light hearted look at star signs may just throw up a breed or side of an animal you hadn't considered.

Aries

Ambitious, confident and adventurous by nature means that active dogs could be best for someone who carries this star sign. Arieans are also described as natural born leaders and so would enjoy a dog who follows commands and instructions extremely well. Labradors, German shepherds and golden retrievers would all keep owners on their feet and be the perfect companion for an Aries who would enjoy burning off lots of energy outside.

Taurus

Taureans value loyalty and devotion above all else, says astronomy experts, which may make them perfect dog owners. Thought to be one of the most intelligent of the star signs, and a group of quick learners, choosing a dog with the same characteristics might be beneficial. Boxers are one of the most loyal breeds around, and they're intelligent too, making them the perfect match for a Taurus. Other intelligent dog breeds include border collies, German shepherds, and Shetland sheepdogs.

Gemini

Geminis are described as intelligent, passionate, and incredibly fun. As people always on the go they could be best suited to a breed who can match this energy: "Speedy doggies who love company would suit them well" says Inbaal.

A fast and energetic breed, such as a Dalmatian, greyhound, or Jack Russell terrier would fit perfectly with the fast pace of the life of a Gemini alongside bearded collies as they're equally playful and love to have fun.

Cancer

"Caring Cancerians are home-loving and would enjoy a dog that likes to snuggle by the fire" says Inbaal. If you're looking for a dog who enjoys a settling down at home then pugs and shih tzus could be among the breeds for you.

Leo

Courageous and fiery in nature, those born under the sign of the lion are described as being proud and strong. This means their personalities would best be complemented by a brave and dominant breed. Leos are also rather sociable, so a playful breed, such as a corgi or a Labrador, will be an ideal canine companion for a Leo. Brave and loyal dogs including daschunds or collie breeds could also compliment personalities perfectly.

Virgo

Virgos are good organisers and whether they're tidying, cleaning, or doing admin they enjoy to stay busy so an active hardworking dog could be ideal. People born under this star sign are also kind and enjoy helping others so would get on particularly well with a friendly and caring canine. Siberian huskies are a hardworking breed, so would be happy to accompany a Virgo.

Libra

Considered to be the most indecisive of the signs, Libras would be well-suited to a patient and gentle breed. People born under this star sign also tend to be incredibly sociable, so a friendly and outgoing dog would match their personality best.

Calm breeds such as shih tzus, pugs, and greyhounds are ideal, as they can stay patient for an indecisive Libra. A Newfoundland is another great option for Libras as they would match the sociable side of a Libra's personality to perfection.

Scorpio

Scorpios are the most mysterious and don't give much away, yet they're brave and thought to be quietly determined. A Dalmatian could be the perfect match for Scorpios as not only are they driven but they tend to prefer being quiet around strangers while being loving and dedicated to those who know them best.

Sagittarius

Just like the other two fire signs, Leo and Aries, Sagittarians tend to be free-spirited adventure lovers, who are all about having fun. People born under this star sign are also very independent, so would match well with an independent breed.

Dachshunds are a very sociable and fun breed while corgis could also perfectly suit a Sagittarius - playful, outgoing, and guaranteed to make you giggle!

Capricorn

Mature, responsible and incredibly hardworking, Inbaal believes animals that are quick learners would be the top choice for a Capricorn.

One of the best-matched breeds, says Inbaal, is a shiba. As one of the most independent breeds, their confidence and intelligence also makes them one of the best to train. For obedient dogs, Poodles are a great option too.

Aquarius

Those born under this sign are often humanitarians, who want to change the world, and provide help to those who need it most. They're also highly intelligent and deep-thinkers. Aquarians should search for a smart and independent dog who is as kind and caring as they are.

Havanese, members of the Bichon family, are a great match for someone who is an Aquarius, thanks to their kind-hearted nature. They're also very loyal, whilst being intelligent and independent too. Labradors are another loving and smart breed, who would get on well with people born under this star sign.

Pisces

Alongside being compassionate and loving, Pisceans are also often selfless and generous with both their time and resources, which means they tend to gravitate towards helping those in need of rescue.

Experienced dog owners under this star sign, it is suggested, may be brilliant potential owners for an adopted rescue dog who needs a little extra love and care.
