Comedian Ronnie Corbett will open a new animal sanctuary on Romney Marsh next month.

The Two Ronnies legend, with his wife Anne, will cut the ribbon for the second Last Chance Animal Rescue Centre, at Ashford Road, New Romney.

The ceremony takes place around noon on Sunday, May 10.

The couple have given a home to two dogs from Last Chance’s existing centre at Edenbridge near Tonbridge.

Trustee Denise Dawes said; “We are very lucky to have them attend and cut the ribbon.

“Due to a huge demand for our help a second centre has been desperately needed for a long time particularly as planning restrictions prohibit further expansion to the Edenbridge centre.

“This opening is fantastic news after many years of fundraising, prudent spending schemes, planning and finally building.’’

The Edenbridge centre has existed for 25 years and next month’s opening is for the first phase of the New Romney development allowing the rehoming of up to 22 dogs and 20 cats at any one time.

Last Chance is already working on the second and third phases, which will have two more kennel blocks.

The charity is appealing for offers of raffle prizes, bottles of alcohol, cakes and plants to help raised funds to develop this.

Last Chance has for years been planning for a base in east Kent and New Romney was chosen because of its closeness to major towns such as Ashford.

Corbett adopted a male schnauzer cross called Baz from Last Chance at Edenbridge three years ago.

Baz appeared in the star's TV show Ronnie's Animal Crackers two years ago.

Corbett adopted another animal from Last Chance in 2013, a male border terrier cross called Bobby.

He and Anne live relatively close to the Edenbridge sanctuary, at Shirley in Croydon, south London.

Ronnie Corbett, now 84, is a household name, particularly because of his partnership with the late Ronnie Barker in the BBC TV comedy show The Two Ronnies from 1971 to 1987.

The programme was famous for its wordplay sketches, comedy songs and spoof news items.

The duo's catchphrase at the end of a show was: "It's goodnight from me,'' "And it's goodnight from him.''

Corbett is now in his 50th year of marriage to actress and dancer Anne Hart.
