Volunteers who have made the Covid-19 vaccination programme on Romney Marsh possible have been thanked for their contribution.

More than 15,000 hours of unpaid time have been given Romney Marsh Community Hub to support the effort of NHS professionals delivering the life-saving jabs.

A team of volunteers has worked to support the vaccination effort by managing queues, meeting and greeting, parking and sanitising arrivals for vaccination, both at the original vaccination centre at Lydd Airport and latterly at Church Lane Surgery and the Old School in New Romney.

The praise for those who have supported medical professionals in the vaccine push comes as the Government announced a fresh effort to deliver booster jabs to fight the new Omicron variant of Covid-19.

All adults will become eligible for a follow-up shot of the vaccine - with the wait between does slashed to three months to speed up the delivery of boosters.

Tayo Bella, clinical lead for the New Romney Old School vaccine service, said: "Working with the Romney Marsh Community Hub volunteers, we have been able to administer over 25,000 Covid vaccinations at the New Romney Old School.

"Without the collaboration of the volunteers, this would have been almost impossible to achieve.

"We are hugely grateful for the wonderful ambience, the information and support the volunteers have offered, as well as their enthusiasm, commitment, and hard work, which has been invaluable.

"We are confident that this great effort has helped to alleviate the effects of the pandemic in our community and in the world at large."

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced army personnel would be brought in to provide additional support for the huge drive to give millions more people a booster jab before the end of January.

"Whenever your turn comes, get your booster and ask your friends and family to do the same," he said.

"It's time for another great British vaccination effort. We've done it before and we'll do it again. Let's not give this virus a second chance."

The PM said boosters would be offered in five year age group bands, with jabs offered at pharmacy sites and temporary vaccination centres.
