Mystery surrounds why armed police were called to a High Street on Romney Marsh in the dead of night.

Officers are remaining tight-lipped as to why at least three armed police units descended on New Romney High Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing an unmarked response car in the area and at lease one police dog near the Spar shop.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said: "Officers were in New Romney High Street during the early hours of Wednesday, October 17 to assist with an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

"Firearms officers were also at the scene where no threats were made and no weapons recovered."
