An 84-year-old woman who had her purse taken in a supermarket has been repaid the stolen money after the community rallied to help her.
Jean Blunt, of St Mary's Bay, was shopping at Sainsbury's in Ashford when her purse was taken from her bag.
It contained £80 in cash, which her daughter Lesley Major said was for her mother's everyday living expenses.
In a post to Facebook group The Real Marsh Watch, she said: “80 pounds to [the thief] will be nothing but to her it’s her food, gas and electricity, plus five pounds a week she saves for Christmas.
“For me it’s heartbreaking to see her look defeated and see her cry. I absolutely know she will bounce back.”
The crime has been reported to police but no arrests have yet been made.
Following her daughter's post, members of the group rallied around in support of Mrs Blunt.
A collection started by member Ann Capel successfully raised the £80 that was taken from the pensioner, as well as paying for a card and flowers.
Sainsbury's also provided a second bunch of flowers, which were presented alongside the other gifts at the Cinque Ports Arms in New Romney.
Following the gesture by the community, Mrs Major said: “Hugest thanks to each and everyone of you that took the time to wish my Mum well.
"It meant so very much to us both.
“We are humbled by the kindness of our new friends and neighbours.
“I’d like to say a special thanks to Ann Capel who organised the collection which amazingly replaced every stolen penny, each and everyone of you that donated we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
“Thanks to Sarah Manning for coming along to meet us and also for the flowers.
"A valuable lesson was learnt the hard way but out of someone’s wicked action we have become rich with people’s kindness and blessings.”
