A primary school class has had a surprise virtual visit from a top TV celebrity and author.

David Walliams sent his thanks and best wishes to the children of Dymchurch Primary School after they created a display board about his work.

The idea was inspired by teaching assistant Lucy Muckett and, with the help of the children, a masterpiece was created.

Office manager Steph Moir took to Twitter via the school's page to show David Walliams the final piece and he loved it.

In fact, he liked it so much that he sent the children a video message - dressed in fine period dress - thanking them for their display work, saying how touched he was and how fantastic it looked.

In the video, the Britain's Got Talent judge said: "Hello to everyone at Dymchurch Primary School, I'm David Walliams.

"I wanted to say a big thank you - I saw the incredible display you put together based on my books and I was really, really touched.

"It looks absolutely fantastic so thank you for your hard work, and I just want to wish each and everyone of you a very merry Christmas.

The children were apparently "in awe" when they watched the video in their classrooms and couldn’t believe that he was speaking to them.

Babiche Deysel, executive head teacher, said: “We haven’t really had a celebrity message us back before and to have someone as famous as David tweet us at Dymchurch is amazing.

"We worked really hard on the display and the children enjoy reading his books, to the extent that we never have enough of them for the children to read.

"The school would like to thank David Walliams for the time he took out of his busy schedule to record a video message to our children, it really means a lot to us all."
