Men fined after breaking Coronavirus regualtions on Romney Marsh

A group of people have been find more than £2,000 after being caught breaching Covid-19 regulations.

Police officers found the group after being informed about possible hare coursing on Romney Marsh on Saturday.

The group of men were spotted by officers in a field near to Melon Lane, and tried to escape when police arrived.

They were stopped, and it was found that none of them were wearing face coverings or social distancing.

A total of 12 men were given fixed penalty notices of £200 each for breaching government rules, to a total of £2,400.

Assistant Chief Constable Claire Nix said: "We continue to ask that people follow the guidance, help control the spread of the virus and save lives and are reminding people that they need to take personal responsibility to protect others from harm.

"We will continue to police in the way we have since March - using the '4 E' approach of Engage, Explain, Encourage and Enforce as a last resort.

"In most situations, we resolve breaches without having to issue a fine.

"Where people refuse to listen and comply or blatantly exploit the regulations with large gatherings - and are putting everyone at risk - we will take robust enforcement action."
