Katie Hopkins has been slammed for appearing to joke about the Camber Sands beach tragedy on Twitter.

Sussex Police branded the controversial columnist "extremely insensitive" for the post, in which she made fun of the possible identities of five men pulled from the sea yesterday.

In the offensive tweet, she posted a poll with the question "5 dead at Camber Sands were..." and four options: aspiring footballer, mentally ill, fans of Anders Brevik or big fans of inflatables.

Other Twitter users reacted angrily, with @Stewart Ayrey reporting it to Sussex Police for being "bad taste at very least".

The force replied: "Incredibly insensitive, although not criminal. We suggest reporting her to @Twitter. We have already."

The tweet can no longer be seen.

Three men were pulled from the water at the East Sussex beach yesterday afternoon. Despite the efforts of rescue teams, they could not be saved.

Yesterday evening, a further two bodies were recovered.

Police today confirmed they were aged in their teens and 20s, and on a day trip to the beach from the Greater London area.

It comes after The Sun published a front page story on the tragedy, questioning whether the victims were migrants.
