Volunteers launched a rescue operation following reports of a person in distress in the sea.

Crews from Littlestone RNLI were called just before 7am this morning to help with the search off the coast of St Mary’s Bay, on Romney Marsh.

They launched their B-Class inshore lifeboat Jean McIvor and headed to the reported location.

The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd was also scrambled.

After approaching the position where the casualty had been seen, it was discovered that the individual was found to have left the water and, although in some distress, out of danger.

The Coastguard approached the casualty on land, and the lifeboat was stood down.

If you find yourself in an emergency situation or spot someone else in trouble, you should call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
