Lifeguards will remain on duty at Camber Sands after the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Temporary cover was agreed between the RNLI and Rother District Council for the weekend following the deaths of five men who drowned on Wednesday.

But it was confirmed today that lifeguards will be staying to protect the beach until the end of the school holidays.

A spokesman for the RNLI confirmed to KentOnline their teams will stay at the Sussex beach until Sunday, September 4.

Calls have been made to Hastings MP, the local authority and the RNLI to have permanent lifeguards stationed there.

This week's deaths brings the total to six in the space of a month after 19-year-old Brazilian tourist Gustavo Silva Da Cruz lost his life there in July.

An online petition campaigning for permanent lifeguards has now reached more than 7,500 signatures.
