A pedestrian was airlifted to a London hospital this morning following an accident.

Kent police officers were called at 8.22am after the incident in High Street, New Romney.

A man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was injured after being hit by what is believed to be a horse box.

Police and ambulance crews attended the scene, which is though to be near the junction of Rome Road and Victoria Street.

Kevin Gibbons, who owns nearby restaurant Fish and Peri, said he heard the commotion when the emergency services arrived.

He said: "We heard the helicopter come overhead, and then loads of emergency vehicles turned up.

"There must have been the air ambulance, two ambulances and about six police cars.

"No one really knows what happened but some people have said they saw a man being taken off in a stretcher with lots of tubes around him.

"Someone else said they saw a lot of blood.

"The police shut the high street off for ages and they were doing a full crime scene investigation."

The severity of the man's injuries are not known at present.
