A pensioner on Romney Marsh fell victim to a double scam, after burglars stole his wallet then targeted his bank account on the same day.

The distraction burglary in the New Romney area has led to Kent Police issuing a reminder to never give out bank card pin numbers.

It is reported at around 10am on Tuesday, May 21, a man knocked on the door of a property in St Andrew's Road in Littlestone.

He asked if he could have a drink for his wife who was on the beach, which the victim, a man in his 80s, agreed to fetch.

The same man returned to the property again around five minutes later and this time asked to use the bathroom, which he was permitted to do so.

After the man left, the victim noticed his wallet containing bank cards and cash was missing from the living room.

At around 12.30pm the victim then received a phone call from a person claiming to be from the bank, who persuaded him to give out his PIN.

More money was taken from his bank account during the same day.

The suspect was described as a white man, around 6ft tall, aged in his 20s, and had a bicycle with him.

Kent Police Inspector Julien Lawton from Folkestone Community Safety Unit said: "This was a nasty distraction burglary where the victim lost money twice in one day, from his wallet and from his bank account.

"Distraction burglars tend to prey on those who are elderly as they are seen as easy targets, so if you have elderly relatives or neighbours, keep an eye on them and ensure they are cautious of cold callers and know how to deal with them.

"Most people will be genuine but some may not be, and if you are in any doubt, don't let them in your home.

"We also want to remind people that you should never share your PIN with anyone.

"Your bank and police officers will never ask you to confirm your PIN, either on the phone or in person."

Anyone with information regarding the burglary in Littlestone is asked to call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting 46/97216/19.

Alternatively you can call the independent charity, Crimestoppers in Kent, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
