Searches for a former town councillor are continuing this morning after he went missing from his home.

Clifford Butler, who used to sit on New Romney town council, first went missing from his home in the town on Tuesday morning.

Coastguard and RNLI patrols were spotted scanning the Marsh yesterday as part of the investigation into his disappearance.

Police remain concerned for the pensioner's welfare, after he was last seen at his house at around 7am, making it more than 48 hours since his went missing.

Kent Search and Rescue have also been involved in the search.

Mr Butler, 72, previously made headlines highlighting healthcare strains and ambulance provisions on the Marsh back in 2015.

He is described as white, around 6ft tall with grey hair.

He was last seen wearing glasses and a beige jacket and is reported to have difficulty walking.

Further sightings of Mr Butler have since been reported to police, and it is believed he was seen in the Coast Drive and Seaview Road areas between 8am and 9am on Tuesday, January 8.

Inspector Jonathan Press said: "It is reported Mr Butler was carrying a bag at the time, and may have been waiting at the bus stop in Coast Drive.

"People would have been travelling to work during that time, perhaps on foot, by car or bus and we ask anyone who saw him or has seen him since, to come forward."

Mr Butler is also believed to have links to the Portsmouth area.

Officers are asking anyone with any information as to his whereabouts to contact them on 101, quoting reference 08-842.
