Trees and grassland at army ranges were on fire this afternoon.

Four fire engines were sent to the Lydd Ranges on Romney Marsh following the blaze at 3pm.

Video shows plumes of smoke coming from the land.

A spokesman for the fire service said at 5.25pm: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service is currently at the scene of fire involving a number of trees and an area of grassland alight on the Lydd Ranges in Lydd, Romney Marsh.

"Four fire engines are in attendance, and crews are working to extinguish the flames using main jets, hose reel jets and beaters."

Just after 6pm, the service said the fire had been put out.

No casualties were reported, and the cause has not yet been confirmed.

In 2019, it took firefighters three days to end a fire at the ranges - which the army regularly uses to test munitions.

At its height, more than 100 firefighters and 20 fire engines were tackling the blaze, and more than five hectares of undergrowth, approximately the size of five football pitches, were on fire.

So far this year, Kent Fire and Rescue Service has attended more than 400 grass fires and wildfires, in comparison to just 44 in 2021.
