A former Marsh golf club boss, who recently passed away, has been described by his loving family as the 'backbone' of their household.

Brian Evans was the secretary and manager of Lydd Golf Club and also the co-designer and builder of Littlestone’s Romney Warren golf course.

He recently passed away, aged 84, after what his family described as a deterioration in his health.

His son, Bryn Evans, 50, said: "He was always there as the backbone of the family. If you needed advice, you went to Dad.

"It was upsetting for the whole family, especially the grandchildren."

Mr Evans, who lived in Blackheath before moving to Littlestone 35 years ago, also served as the Kent County Golf Union Captain from 1980 to 1983, and the county secretary from 1988 until 1995.

The former Kent Colts team coach had served on the national committee that oversaw the handicap changes to golf in 1981.

In addition, he played a large role in setting up the United Kingdom Senior Golf Association, and became chairman there.

His family say one of his finest moments was when he was selected to play for the Welsh Golf Seniors against his old adversary, England.

In addition to his golf, he also had an interest in railways and enjoyed riding his bike. He took part in the first tour of Britain as a cyclist.

His son described him as a 'strong man': "He had very old fashioned beliefs. He was a hard worker.

"He certainly lived a full life."

He added that his loss has had a profound impact: "We are all living our lives thinking 'What would Dad say?' He is going to be in our thoughts on a daily basis."

Mr Evans is survived by his wife, Barbara and his two sons, Bryn and Doug, 61. He also has four grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

His funeral recently took place at Charing Crematorium, where guests were asked to donate to the British Heart Foundation instead of flowers.
