It was due to an incident involving two vehicles at the road's junction with Romney Road (B2075) heading towards Lydd.

A picture sent to KentOnline by Sonny Spencer showed drivers queuing in both directions towards Ashford and Littlestone.

The road reopened just before 4pm and traffic has since cleared.

A spokeswoman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to reports of a car crash involving two cars on the A259 (junction B2075) in New Romney.

“Two fire engines attended and crews used hydraulic equipment to stabilise the vehicle.”

Following the incident, several residents have demanded action be taken on what one person described online as a "dangerous junction".

Another added: "There's always accidents on that bit of road.

"I'm grateful for those who let me out from Lydd."
