A woman died after trying to reach her grandchild in the sea, an inquest has heard.
Denise Scarborough drowned after entering the water in Dymchurch on Thursday, August 26.
An inquest opening at County Hall heard the 60-year-old had been at the beach with her family when tragedy struck.
The court heard that after going into the water to "reach her grandchild", the retired security guard was pulled from the water, unresponsive.
Emergency services including police, the coastguard and ambulance services were called, but paramedics were unable to revive Mrs Scarborough who was declared dead at the scene.
Assistant Coroner Katrina Hepburn gave her cause of death as drowning, pending toxicology reports.
The inquest was opened and immediately suspended for a later date.
