A widow has said she's 'overwhelmed' after hundreds of people on Romney Marsh helped in an attempt to beat a Guinness World Record with a famous party dance.

Almost 600 people got funky on the floor at the weekend to try and surpass the current highest number of people dancing to Oops Upside Your Head, all in aid of charity.

Radley Gunton, 54, who runs the Dymchurch Village Cafe, organised the mass routine on Dymchurch beach on Saturday in memory of her late husband Martin.

He died just 20 weeks after they got married in March 2017 following a heart attack and rare cancer diagnosis.

She said: "It was amazing. The atmosphere was brilliant.

"We were all very overwhelmed by the response.

"It's brought Dymchurch together. We couldn't believe the amount of people who took the time to come."

The event was designed to raise much-needed funds for the Royal British Legion and Pilgrims Hospice, who looked after Martin in his final few weeks.

People who got involved with the Marsh rendition of the 1979 funk classic by The Gap Band were asked to contribute £2, bringing the combined total raised for both charities to £1,400.

Mrs Radley said: "I just want to thank anybody that came.

"Even if we haven't beat it, it was a fantastic day."

Local reggae DJ Olas Boss also provided music on the day.

The organisers hope that a similar event can be held next year to unite the community once again in aid of charity.

Mrs Martin puts the current world record at 246 people, but a total of 593 danced on Saturday afternoon.

It's hoped that Guinness will ratify their official attempt soon.
