PLANS are being made for a new animal rescue and rehoming centre to be built on Romney Marsh, it has been revealed.
A site has been bought in Ashford Road, New Romney, for the Last Chance Animal Rescue centre and plans are now underway to develop the £200,000 base.
The charity already cares for dogs, cats and other small animals at its centre in Edenbridge, which is full with a long waiting list.
The Ashford Road site used to be home to Kiwi Kennels, which closed down three years ago. There are already kennel and cattery areas but the building needs to be renovated.
It could be up to a year before the rescue and re-homing centre is ready to open but charity trustee Denise Dawes said it will be well worth it.
“The new centre has a licence to hold up to 64 dogs and about 40 cats, which is great because at the moment we are having to turn animals away,” said Mrs Dawes.
“We never put healthy animals to sleep so only take on what we can cope with.”
The launch day is on Saturday, October 28, when people will be encouraged to volunteer their skills as part of Make a Difference Day. If you are a plumber, electrician, carpenter, decorator or handy-man then the centre would like to hear from you.
There is also a sponsored walk starting at 10am with two different routes. A fun dog show, tombola, children’s games and music by the King Bees will also entertain the crowds.
Staff will also bring some rabbits for children to play with and learn about.
Mrs Dawes said: “We are hoping people will come along and pledge their help or donate materials so we can get up and running as soon as possible.”
