Dungeness Road shut after tourist bus gets stuck in shingles on roadside

A private road has been shut after a foreign tourist coach got stuck in shingle.

The vehicle from Germany is blocking Dungeness Road near Prospect Cottage in Dungeness.

A picture has been taken of the Welter Tours bus by resident Aeryn Parsons. It shows the vehicle has tilted as its left wheels have sunk into the stones and sand on the roadside on Romney Marsh.

“I saw the bus when I was cycling down to Dungeness on my lunch break,” Aeryn Parsons said.

“The driver obviously didn't realise how soft the shingle is here and the bus sunk up to its axles right outside Prospect Cottage.

“A heavy recovery truck was trying to pull the coach out while the passengers looked on.”

Owen Leyshon from Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership says it is not the first time this has happened.

“It’s just another episode,” he said.

“We have lots of tourists and visitors come onto the Dungeness estate and over many decades, we’ve had multiple vehicles such as lorries, buses and delivery vans get stuck.”

He added his colleagues are at the scene and have closed the road while the bus is pulled out.

“My colleague is down there at the moment and the bus is being pulled out of the shingles,” he said.

“It’s a dead end road so when we have these incidents we have to close the road. We’ve got no other choice.

“We will try and be as quick as possible.”
