A £1 million renovation of Sandwich Guildhall Forecourt has been delayed until after the summer.
The major transformation was expected to start soon, with a nearby museum closing its doors in November in preparation.
But budget issues brought about by the pandemic plus a change in the national bus strategy have forced Dover District Council to reschedule the work until autumn 2022.
The redevelopment project is set to transform the town’s square by resurfacing it and adding a new bus shelter, seating and lighting.
It has been developed in collaboration with the county, district and town councils, and the people living and working in the area.
Contributions include £400,000 from Dover District Council, £350,000 from Sandwich Town Council via a public works loan, an R&A Open Legacy contribution of £75,000, £25,000 from Discovery Park plus a Kent County Council Highway contribution.
Changes to the national bus strategy mean some minor changes are due to be made to the original design and will be submitted shortly.
This will ensure the public transport provision is fit for the future.
DDC deputy leader, Cllr Oliver Richardson, said: “We are pleased to be able to continue with the planned improvements to the Guildhall Square in Sandwich.
"This project will positively enhance the public realm and be an asset for staged events, local businesses, and the community.
"Despite the additional financial challenge brought about by the pandemic, I am delighted that this project can progress to fruition later this year.”
It means the regular town market and the town's popular spring/summer festivals can go ahead without interference.
Having closed over concerns of vibrations from the use of heavy machinery, Sandwich Guildhall Museum is now set to reopen as soon as staff have been employed.
Chief executive of Sandwich Town Council, Amandajayne Hollobon-Baxter, said: “The delay is unfortunate, but it is vital that the bus area is in line with the new bus strategy.
“Our plans are to reopen the museum.
“An advert for staff has already been posted to relevant museum related platforms."
