Wall repairs and new lighting are just the start of an extensive works programme to make Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre fit for use by students and the public.
New owners Sandwich Technology School, which took over the lease from Sandwich Leisure Trust in May, say £250,000 worth of issues need to be addressed at the centre.
It includes essential roof maintenance, new fire doors and other fire safety equipment, updates to the dance studio and squash courts and refurbishment of the changing rooms, toilets, reception and coffee shop areas.
Having launched a £30,000 fundraising campaign, head teacher Tracey Savage is delighted to have already raised almost £7,000.
This have allowed for a deep clean, repairs and repainting of the walls and the installation of new LED lighting to already take place.
The installation of a new Sports Hall floor is scheduled for mid July.
Ms Savage said: “We are delighted at the response so far to our appeal for extra funds to help improve this vital facility for both the school and the community.
"So far we have raised over £6600, which is 22% of our target value. We have various plans for future fundraising events - both in school and in partnership with others - and we are confident that, given time and everybody’s ongoing support, we will reach our target.
"I can only say a deeply felt thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.”
Management company Freedom Leisure is continuing to run the site in a new joint partnership with the school.
The school itself is making a significant contribution to the cost of the repairs.
In taking over the asset, they made a commitment that the public can continue to use the centre, once lockdown restrictions have been further eased.
Ms Savage added: "We have made clear that this initiative isn't just about STS students, but is about reinstating a valuable community asset - that is why we are fundraising widely.
"We very much hope that the sports hall refurbishment will be complete by September and we are planning an official opening and/or fundraising event to celebrate this huge step forward."
Other fundraising efforts include 'dress down Fridays' by the key worker provision at the school.
A member of staff who underwent a hip replacement less than a year ago has also pledged to complete a sponsored 5k run.
Plus sales of ice creams, secondhand books and snacks to pupils is also bringing in funds.
The school is also exploring various local and national grants and a possible 'row to France' sponsored event in the leisure centre.
