Loud revving and screeching from motorcyclists along the Sandwich Bypass is ruining another summer for residents, claims one councillor.

Paul Carter of Sandwich Town Council is now pleading with the authorities to take action over the issue.

Last week Cllr Carter said it reached a peak, branding the noise "the worst it's ever been".

He says he and his wife Danielle, who live in Stone Cross Lees, were forced to stay indoors and shut their windows in a bid to escape the racket.

He said complaints from other south-side residents have since flooded his inbox prompting him to press the police and Dover District Council (DDC) on what action is being taken.

He's now encouraging people to take the matter up with the Police and Crime Commission Matthew Scott during his visit to Sandwich tomorrow.

He told KentOnline: "It’s making our lives a misery.

"We locked the double glazing and could still hear the noise from 6.45pm until gone 9pm; screeching, loud revving, bike, after bike, after bike.

"A few times it felt like the motorbikes were in our living room as the rear windows trembled.

"We had three answer phone messages and six emails asking when this blight on summer living in Sandwich will be ended.

"Police are doing absolutely nothing about this anti-social behaviour at all. It is beyond belief that no one at DDC has any power to stop it?

"That's another summer ruined due to lack of local authority support."

Cllr Carter reported the matter to police via 101 but says he was told to report it to DDC's Commmunity Safety Unit (CSU).

He added: "Cllr Joe Trussler tried to solve the problem with the motorbikes eight years ago and I have raised the issue with Kent Police every year since.

"Sandwich Town Council has written to Kent Police so many times too but it is KCC and DDC who could address the issue under environmental protection laws but aren’t doing anything.

"Meanwhile Sandwich residents can’t go out in their gardens on Wednesday, and now weekends.

"It’s not all bikers but the problem has grown and the authorities are letting us down."

In an email, seen by this newspaper, DDC's Brinley Hill responded to Cllr Carter that the CSU had spoken with more than 80 bikers at Adelaide Cafe - a popular gathering spot.

He explained that the CSU need to continue to build further evidence if they are to implement a Public Spaces Protection Order across the district.

He writes "Can you encourage residents to keep reporting this issue via the community safety unit or 101 as this is vital for us to gain as much evidence as possible, it also helps us to keep the pressure on our partners."

A DDC spokesman said: "We are aware of concerns in this area, and are working with the biker community to try and resolve this issue.

"We understand that the majority of motorbike riders do respect the community they are visiting.

"We continue to work with community safety partners, including Kent Police, on this matter and enforcement options are one possible solution being explored if issues cannot be resolved."

A Kent Police spokesman said: "We received a call regarding noise made by motorbikes on the A256 Sandwich bypass just before 8pm on Wednesday 10 July 2019, and while taking details from the caller, police were informed the noise had stopped.

"The details were passed to officers in the Dover Community Safety Unit who are assisting partners from Dover District Council in their work to address this issue."
