A dramatic video has captured the “terrifying” moment a huge RAF helicopter was spotted flying “very low” over the Kent coastline.

The Boeing Chinook HC.MK 6 was seen in the sky over Sandwich earlier this evening.

The aircraft, which can reach heights of 20,000 ft, was reportedly captured just less than 100 feet off the ground above the town.

Residents noted the moment it flew over ahead.

Speaking to KentOnline, one woman who witnessed the helicopter pass over Cambridge Avenue in the town said: “It didn’t shake the building, but the noise was terrifying.”

One resident said: “It’s just gone over Guston and was so close... I was in my bedroom, and it was just a bit higher than the houses.”

Another added: “It was very low over our horse field less than house height.”

The vehicle, which can carry 10 tonnes, is primarily used by the RAF for troop movement and resupply.

Based at RAF Odiham and Benson the aircraft can also be used in search and rescue.

It’s thought the chinook briefly landed in Dover before taking off again shortly afterwards.

The RAF has been approached for more information.
