A crushed bollard in front of The Barbican in Sandwich will finally be replaced months after it was first damaged.

Kent County Council has confirmed the work will take place after KentOnline's sister newspaper The Mercury pressed the authority on Monday.

Strand Street resident Richard Linning alerted the paper to the damage to the illuminated sign in a letter to the editor, prompting us to push KCC for action.

He said: “As welcome as proposals for traffic management are in the context of the urban design consultant, Rummey Design’s proposals for the regeneration of Sandwich, some glaring problems need to be addressed immediately.

“There is a damaged traffic beacon at the Barbican, hidden signs along Ramsgate Road and obscured traffic signs in Ash Road.

“These particular examples have required attention for months.”

KCC said it was not aware it had been damaged but will now work to replace it.

KCC spokesman Murray Evans said: “I have now found the location of the bollard and have instructed a crew to attend to remove the damaged bollard and place a temporary bollard until the base unit can be replaced.

“I have checked our records and can confirm there has been no reports from the public regarding the bollard having been damaged.

“The area engineer has raised an order for a complete replacement due to the damage.”
