Sandwich Town Team has received a grant of £650 to host a traffic calming consultation day for residents.

The community group, which has been working on possible solutions to some of the transport issues in Sandwich, such as lorries and speeding, was given the grant by Sandwich Town Council.

The plan is to host a consultation day at the Guildhall in early to mid-October which will include a presentation and discussions of the Town Team’s Green Paper.

Howard Norton, of the Town Team, said: “We propose a slide presentation explaining our proposals which we will repeat at various intervals during the day.

“Then individuals can go to break-out areas to follow up on certain topics, so if they are just interested in pedestrianisation, or buses, or lorry signs they can do that.

“The idea is to do it in a way that’s quite informal.”

The plans include a 7.5 tonne weight limit throughout the conservation zone with limited exemptions for deliveries and service vehicles.

Prominent signs and visual cues on the approach roads could discourage lorries from entering and a re-think on how buses are deployed could be made with a critical eye on size and emissions.

The group also suggests speeding tables, pinch points, crossings and bollards to calm traffic.

It also wants to make the one-way system safer for pedestrians with a shared space or pedestrianisation.

All these plans will be on show on the day and the public are invited to make their views known on what they like or dislike.

Mr Norton said: “These are serious proposals but nothing is set in stone. We would expect them to be modified as a result of consulting with the public.”

The proposals have also been submitted to a stakeholders working group chaired by Sandwich MP Craig Mackinlay and they are under discussion with Kent County Council, Highways England, English Heritage and Stagecoach.
