Sandwich is in need of volunteers to help during the Magna Carta Rediscovered exhibition at the Guildhall.

The council is appealing for anyone who can give a morning or an afternoon to come forward and gain valuable experience of an exhibition with national importance.

It will run from Thursday, September 24 until Tuesday, October 6 and will be open every day from 9am until 6pm.

The plan is to have two or more stewards at a time as well as Guildhall staff.

Volunteer stewards will be required to work from 8.45am to 1.15pm and from 1.15pm to 6pm.

They will be responsible for reception and security duties, assisting with the selling of gifts and dealing with public enquiries.

Training can be provided in advance of the exhibition.

Sandwich businesses are also being urged to seize the opportunity for tourism from the travelling Magna Carta exhibition.

Faversham, which is hosting the exhibition at the moment, has been advising the town clerk on how to run this event.

Laura Fidler said: “In Faversham a lot of local business are doing Magna Carta-themed food and drink.”

The amount of visitors that will be coming to the medieval town to see its Magna Carta and Charter of Forest is expected to hit record highs.

Shops, cafes, pubs and other traders are welcomed to help celebrate with activities and events and to help draw the crowds in.

The next step is for designers of the exhibition to assess the Jury Room in the Guildhall, where it will take place.

This has seen some delays and will now happen on Monday, July 6.
