Honours for ex-mayor and charity worker

A former mayor and a fund-raiser have been celebrating being included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Cllr John Bragg, 78, a former Sandwich Mayor, was given the OBE for his voluntary service to the community in east Kent and Deal fund-raiser Barbara Williams becomes an MBE for her services to the community.
Cllr Bragg said his family was delighted and the announcement was marked with “lots of champagne”.
Cllr Bragg lives with his wife Anthea in St George’s Road, Sandwich, and the couple have three children, two step-children and 16 grandchildren.
He was voted on to Sandwich Town Council 23 years ago and was mayor for three years from 1989, as well as speaker of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports in 1989-1990. He also served on the district council between 1986-2003.
He moved to Sandwich 50 years ago and was a director at Pfizer. He was chairman of the Canterbury and Thanet, then East Kent, health authoritites and is still vice-chairman of the Kent Community Housing Trust, a charity providing residential care for the elderly.
He is also chairman of the governing body of Canterbury Christ Church University, chairman of St Mary’s Community Trust in Sandwich and a member of Royal St George’s Golf Club, where he was captain in 1998.

Barbara Williams has been a branch volunteer for Macmillan Nurses and with her committee had raised more than £250,000 for the charity.
In 2006 she was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship, the highest award by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
