The Cinque Ports Speaker’s Day parade returns to Sandwich after seven years tomorrow.

People are invited to join in the celebrations hosted by the mayor of Sandwich and speaker of the confederation of the Cinque Ports, Cllr Paul Graeme.

There will be a procession of the confederation of the Cinque Ports at 10.30am from St Mary’s Church to St Clements Church where a service of worship and thanksgiving will be conducted by the Rev Canon Mark Roberts, the rector of Sandwich and mayor’s chaplain, from 11am.

Mayor of Sandwich and speaker of the confederation of the Cinque Ports, Cllr Paul Graeme.

At noon the procession will return to St Mary’s Church via New Street.

The office of speaker goes back to the 12th century and it is rotated between the five head Cinque Ports of New Romney, Hythe, Hastings, Dover and Sandwich and the two ancient towns of Rye and Winchelsea.

The new speaker takes over every May and Speaker’s Day in the autumn also rotates between the towns.
