A laser gun is being used to catch speeding drivers in Sandwich.

The town council agreed to a request from PC Ian Woodland to provide one following a series of complaints about the high speeds of motorists, especially in the 20mph zone.

PC Woodland, who stopped and talked to 13 motorists in just one day, said: “I will be out and about in the trouble hot spots.”

Drivers caught breaking the limit can be issued with £60 fixed penalty notices and also penalty points on their licences.

PC Woodland said as the small laser gun was lightweight, he can visit any of the narrow streets of Sandwich and had the element of surprise to drivers.

As neighbourhood policing officer for Sandwich, Worth and Woodnesborough, he can check speeding across his area.

He added: “Many people disrespect the 20mph limit inside the town wall and I shall be concentrating especially on the one-way road.

“Having the new laser gun is an excellent example of the continued positive partnership between Sandwich Town Council and the police to reduce crime and reduce traffic injuries.”

The partnership has also helped provide two new bicycles for Sandwich, for use by PC Woodland and the police support community officer Ian Norton.
