An evening of merriment and fun is promised at a performance to celebrate the Winter Solstice at St Peter’s Church in Sandwich.

Rough Musicke has been researching festive tunes and carols that were popular during medieval times to create the show on Saturday, December 21 at 6pm.

The popular band will play period tunes on their reproduction instruments, namely bagpipes, hurdy gurdy, recorders, fiddle, hammer dulcimer, drums and wonderful sleigh bells in their authentic costumes.

Band member Julia Baxter said: "It may comes as a shock to realise that many of the customs we enjoy during the festive season date back to the Middles Ages or earlier.

"In the medieval period people gave gifts, sang carols, decorated their homes, indulged in seasonal food and drink and had their own Father Christmas, known then as St Nicholas."

This event coincides with the band's third CD.

Mulled wine will be available and warm clothing is advisable.
