Transport police have confirmed that a teenager struck by a train was fatally injured.

The tragedy involving a 17-year-old boy happened near Sandwich on Saturday night.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "We were called to the line near Sandwich railway station at 10.59pm on January 29 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a male was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

BTP have since confirmed that the victim was aged just 17.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "I can confirm our attendance and that one person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

It was at first not known whether the victim had survived or not.

A train from Deal had struck the youngster and it was brought to an emergency stop at 10.51pm.

Services between Dover and Ramsgate were affected.

Passengers were trapped on board in darkness for nearly three hours, as there was no power, and were given glow sticks and foil blankets by rail staff.

Sandwich town councillor Paul Carter was one of those on board.

He told KentOnline: “There were about eight to 10 passengers.

"We were okay but stuck for nearly three hours, some in pitch black. There were just the lights of the search crew outside the windows of the train."
