Police are conducting more speed checks in Sandwich – and councillors say there should be even more.

In a report from police which was discussed at the town council meeting on Monday, it said 113 calls were made to police for incidents in Sandwich between August 14 and September 14.

The report also said that after complaints from councillors, speed enforcement checks were now being carried out on Sandown Road where one vehicle was caught for speeding.

Cllr Paul Carter said that this was good – but not good enough.

He added: “We never see them [police] at all now do we?

“We’ve been chasing the police commissioner round the county trying to make her accountable for this town and parish.

“The police have literally withdrawn from our town.”

In other road checks throughout the town, two people were issued with traffic offence penalties and one was reported for not having insurance.

The report said there had also been a slight rise in shoplifting from the previous month.

Checks had been carried out on the A256 in response to calls over speeding motorcyclists, however the report states it has not highlighted any problems.

Cllr Carter added: “The children and young people in the town are growing up knowing that this town is not policed at all.”

He believes this could have contributed to last week’s theft at St Peter’s Church when the donation box was broken into and funds for the maintenance of the church were stolen.
