Police today remain at the scene where an elderly man and woman were found dead.

The pensioners, aged in their 90s, were found at an address in The Butchery in Sandwich yesterday morning.

The small street was cordoned off and multiple police vehicles filled the surrounding roads while officers carried out inquiries. Ambulances were also in attendance.

They remain in the town today, although only one police car can be seen parked near the road.

A police spokesman confirmed today: “Kent Police was called to a property in Sandwich town centre shortly after 10am yesterday following concerns for two people.

“Officers attended and two people in their 90s were pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The deaths are not being treated as suspicious and officers remain at the scene to carry out enquiries as part of a report being prepared for the coroner.”

Police had yesterday said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the double tragedy.

People in this usually sedate and well-to-do town were left in shock and disbelief by the tragic news.

A townswoman, who did not want to be named, told KentOnline: “Yesterday groups of people were huddled in the street talking about this.

“There is still a weird atmosphere in the town. Nobody really knows what happened.

“The area is still cordoned off but only the police are there now.”

Dan Friend, a district councillor for the town, said: “There is confusion among people here and also sadness for the families of the two victims.

“People have been surprised that there has been such a huge police presence but they just don’t know what exactly has happened.”
