Emergency services were called after a car crashed through railings and into a water-filled ditch.

Police, paramedics and Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended New Street, Sandwich yesterday.

It is thought the 4x4 hit parked cars, before colliding with railings and ending up in a ditch.

The driver has since been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Reports from the scene said the road was shut by Ropewalk and the petrol station just after 5pm.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "The driver of the car was trapped. Firefighters stabilised the vehicle and released the driver through the rear of the vehicle, into the care of attending ambulance crew."

A Kent Police spokesman said on Sunday morning: "Kent Police was called at 5.04pm on 11 November following reports a car had collided with a number of parked vehicles and then railings, in New Street, Sandwich.

"Officers attended the scene and there were no reported injuries. The driver, a man, was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the legal alcohol limit and remains in custody."
