Police caught two speeding motorists in Sandwich as part of checks in Sandown Road.

Officers are clamping down on speeding after residents shared their concerns.

Sandown Road resident Iain Fairweather has said many motorists continue to exceed the 30mph speed limit on the street. He has appealed for flashing repeater signs but Kent County Council said the road was not one of the sites that needed improvement as a matter of priority.

Sgt Paul Gammon, of the police Dover Community Safety Unit, confirmed that officers would continue to make speed checks on the road.

A check was carried out on Wednesday, May 13, and two drivers were caught speeding.

He said: “Kent Police, along with members of the Dover Community Safety Partnership, including KFRS, KCC community wardens and Dover District Council staff, were on the Quay to hear what issues people felt were affecting them. Road safety remains a priority so members of the Kent Police Special Constabulary were carrying out speed enforcement during the day.

“Two drivers were stopped for excess speed on Sandown Road and tickets were issued.

“It is reassuring such a low number of drivers had to be spoken to but we will continue to monitor any areas of concern.

“All road users have a responsibility in keeping our roads safe and anyone caught speeding could face losing their licence.”

Mr Fairweather, 77, has said he will not give up his fight to ensure that speeding stops outside his home.
