More than £3,000 worth of new festive decorations are now on show in Sandwich following the town's official Christmas lights switch-on.

Families enjoyed a full day extravaganza on Saturday which included King Street Party with fake snow, live music from Ozzie and The Uglies and a funfair.

The action culminated at 7pm with the flicking of a switch by local heroes.

These were Lucy Dent, who has served the community working at Sandwich Railway Station for 35 years, and Amy and Daniel Watkins, young volunteers at St Peter's Church.

Crowds gathered in Market Street this year, a change of venue from the Guildhall Forecourt due to uncertainty surrounding social distancing and upcoming forecourt renovations.

The events were organised by a team of volunteers from Sandwich Community Lights Committee, led by chairman Dean Marie.

Mr Marie said: "It was a great day and evening. The town was packed all day and night.

"We have spent £3,100 on new lighting this year in Market Street which is part of our five-year upgrade plan, which we hope people will enjoy.
