A councillor is waging war on the "yellow peril" of parking lines in Sandwich.

Cllr Paul Carter spoke out against an increase in yellow lines at a meeting of Sandwich Town Council.

"Some of these lines are excessive for a medieval Cinque Port and town," he said.

"We are succumbing to the yellow peril which seem to be proposed for no reason whatsoever.

"Why are so many of these lines being put down in Sandwich?"

Cllr Carter called for some of the plans for double yellow lines to be sent back and not implemented.

The county council has published a list of proposals for new waiting restrictions in Dover Road, Market Street, Sandown Road and the St George’s Road area, with consultations taking place in the past two years.

Many councillors questioned the amount of months the discussions have been taking place.

Cllr John Bragg said he was concerned about a stretch of St George’s Road that had been waiting for the double yellow lines.

He said: "The corner near the former police station is very dangerous and drivers take the bend very quickly indeed."

Cllr Bragg said the road would be safer with double yellow lines, especially as one driver had left a vehicle parked on the corner for some time.

Sandwich Mayor Cllr Joe Trussler said he was worried the new parking restrictions would push cars out to other roads without double yellow lines.

It was agreed the council write to the district council voicing their concerns about the proposals.
