Futures for Dogs in Sandwich launches Christmas appeal at most difficult time of year

An animal rescue charity in Sandwich has launched a Christmas appeal for support as it faces its most difficult time of year.

This time last year Futures for Dogs struggled to stay open and sent out a heartfelt plea to friends and supporters for donations and help.

Volunteer Mandy Samuel said: “Christmas is upon us and soon we will not be homing any more dogs for a while but this does not stop us taking in as many as we can.

“At present we already have two abuse cases and three puppy farm bitches in our care and three of these will be with us for a while. “We would like to be able to continue taking dogs in especially over the quieter winter months when homing does not always go well and Christmas dogs bought are now no longer wanted.”

Ms Samuel explained that as many people buy puppies for Christmas this is also handing money to puppy farmers.

She said: “So many people go and pay hundreds to these farmers every year just for a cute pup for Christmas, most never think of the ones that are left behind especially the breeding bitches and the awful conditions they live in.”

This includes Chloe who has come on in leaps and bounds and will be able to meet people at the Bits and Bobs Fair held at the Guildhall in Sandwich today (Saturday) from 9am until 3pm.

A New Years Eve street collection in Deal will also be held to raise extra funds.

The aim is also to raise awareness of the high rise in dogs stolen at this time of year by people who sell them on for quick cash.

Ms Samuel said: “Do not leave your dog unattended outside shops, back gardens or in unlocked cars and when out walking make sure you know where your pet is at all times. Also, watch your pet at home as there are so many Christmas goodies and plants that are dangerous for your pet.

“Finally, we would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and thank you for all your support and kindness.”
