A butcher from Ash has been celebrating after its bull was awarded the title of Male Sussex Champion at an agricultural show.
Goldstone Butchers, part of Chandler and Dunn Ltd based at Lower Goldstone Farm in Ash, attended the South of England Show in Ardingly last week and entered the live stock into the Senior Bull Class where it claimed first prize.
Stockman Jordan Thompson and his wife Victoria showed the cattle and brought home a collection of rosettes to the Dunn family, who own Goldstone Butchers.
The Mayor of Sandwich, Cllr Paul Graeme, visited the butchers at Sandwich Market last week to congratulate them on their win.
Shop manager Alice Dunn said: “In the Sussex Cattle Classes our bull, Regent 7th of Goldstone won Male Sussex Champion and came first in the Senior Bull Class. He was named as the overall Sussex Breed Champion.
“He is a lovely three year old bull that following our Open Farm Sunday at the weekend has been nick-named by many local people as Gorgeous George.
“We are attending the Royal Norfolk Show and the Kent County Show as well this year where we hope we will have more success.”
The Open Farm Sunday held last week saw more than 1,000 visitors take part in tractor rides, static machinery displays, walks of the farm and a sheep and cattle show, as well as local juice producers, bee keepers and a wood turner on hand to give demonstrations.
Miss Dunn added: “Our herd of pedigree Sussex Cattle was started in 1947 by John Dunn, my grandfather, and it is now run by Roger Dunn, my father. It is from our herd that we supply and stock our own butchers shop which we opened up ten years ago this coming August.”
The shop in Ash is open Tuesday to Friday from 9am till 5pm and Saturday from 9am till 1pm.
Goldstone Butchers is also at the Sandwich Market every Thursday from 8am till 1.30pm.
