The outspoken Conservative peer and Baroness of Sandwich, Jean Trumpington, has recently released her autobiography Coming Up Trumps.
The no-holds-barred memoirs takes a look back at her life, from Wall Street crashes to studying art in Paris, and embarking on a distinguished political career.
She was a Cambridge city councillor, Mayor of Cambridge and then in 1980 became a life peer and chose the title of Baroness Trumpington of Sandwich because of her love for the Cinque Port town where her family home was based.
In the memoirs she recalls her early life, growing up in London and Kent in the 1920s and 30s, her wartime experiences as a land girl on Lloyd George’s estate and as a code breaker at Bletchley Park.
It also recounts her life at Madison Avenue, her time as the wife of Alan Barker, a headmaster of the Leys School in Cambridge, and her Conservative career.
“I have a love of Sandwich and a love of east Kent." -Baroness Trumpington.
About writing her book, she said: “I was allowed to say what I wanted to say.”
Which may not come as a surprise due to her controversial notoriety, which includes sticking up two fingers at Lord King of Bridgwater in the House of Lords in 2011, when he referred to her age.
She added: “I have a love of Sandwich and a love of east Kent and I really loved living as a child there, and I loved my house in Sandwich, it is a magic town.
“I do miss being in Sandwich but I’m 91 now and I can’t plan trips like I used to, it’s not a good train ride from London.”
Baroness Trumpington now lives in Battersea, London.
Coming Up Trumps is published by Pan Macmillan and is available from amazon and all good book stores for £16.99.
