The restoration of one of the finest Norman church towers in the country is a step closer thanks to a major grant from English Heritage.
Work on the second phase of a half million pound project at St Clement’s Church in Sandwich is about to start.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has just announced a £114,000 donation to the tower appeal as part of the Repair Grants for Places of Worship Scheme.
Rector of Sandwich the Rev Canon Mark Roberts said the church was delighted with the news of its successful bid.

“This is a substantial sum of money and means our plans are on track to finish the project by the end of 2010,” he added.
“The tower is an architectural and historical jewel, which has played its part in the story of Sandwich.
“Completion of the restoration work will mean we can continue the life of St Clement’s as a place of living faith for generations to come.”
Mr Roberts said the church was grateful to English Heritage for this latest boost to the appeal along with other recent donations from The Friends of Kent Churches and Marshall’s Charity.
He added: “ I must also thank the tower appeal committee who have worked so hard on this project. We all owe them a great debt of gratitude.”
Appeal chairman David Gates said the grant was recognition of the effort put into the appeal and the fact that the first phase came in on time and under budget.
“We have been prudent and have been able to carry £61,000 forward to phase two,” he added.
Money for the appeal has come from sources including personal donations, fund-raising events like the Festival of Trees and grants from organisations.
Further events are lined up to raise the final £94,000 to complete the project.
