A rescue centre for dogs in Sandwich is struggling with the amount of unwanted pets and a shortage of homes.

Futures For Dogs is in desperate need of funding to be able to continue the vital service it provides.

Centre founder Stevie Henry said two Yorkshire terrier puppies were abandoned and in a terrible condition.

She said: “Words can’t describe the gut-wrenching feeling I had when I saw them.

“The stench from them was unbelievable, their coats were so matted we could not even wash them and the bigger one’s front feet were in such a horrific state we were worried she may have foot rot from laying in her own excrement for year.”

The puppies were seen by Animal House vets, sent to the groomer Barks & Bubbles and then placed in foster care. This has cost Futures For Dogs £1,000.

Ms Henry said: “We are at our wits’ end with the amount of dogs needing rescue space and are desperate for foster homes and funds to carry on helping these poor dogs.”

To raise funds there will be stalls and home-made Valentine’s Day treats, craft stalls and cakes at the Guildhall in Sandwich on Saturday from 9am.
