A new artisan bakery has opened in Sandwich offering freshly baked breads and cakes.

Baps and Bloomers, 6 King Street, opened at the beginning of November and will be hosting a grand opening on Saturday, at 10am.

This family-run business was started when Sarah Boxall, a patent attorney from Sandwich, tried one of Paul Usherwood’s onion breads at the Sandwich Food Fair. She went home to eat it and came back immediately because she had to have another one.

Mr Usherwood is an artisan baker working at Java Bakery based at Discovery Park. He enlisted help from the rest of his family to get this new business off the ground.

Ms Boxall and Danielle Usherwood, an accountant at Discovery Park, are now business partners and run Baps and Bloomers.

Miss Usherwood said: “We’ve had really good feedback and had lots of comments about the bread and the donuts.”

From exhibiting at the Food Fair, they realised there was a gap in the market as there were no other bakeries in the town.

Sisters Natalie, 23, and Chantelle Usherwood, 19, both work in the bakery with Christopher Stringer and the website has been set up by Nathaniel Usherwood, 21, who is studying computer science at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Mum Pauline is also a confectioner and met her husband Paul in a bakery.

Mr Usherwood, who has 30 years’ experience as a baker, will continue working at Discovery Park but will also be supplying Baps and Bloomers.
