The cooling towers at Richborough power station - should they be demolished?

Keep the towers! That is the view of most of you who responded to our Speak Out about the future of the cooling towers at Richborough power station.

The debate was started after reader Peter Davis proposed that the landmark be demolished to provide a modern energy-from-waste plant to provide energy for Kent.

No, you say.

Melvyn John, from Ripple, expressed the views of many of you when he described the towers as a “beautiful landmark.”

He suggested: “The towers themselves could easily be used as the UK’s largest multi-pitch climbing walls and would attract climbers from all over Europe.”

There is still time to have your say through our Speak Out

Peter Cocks, from Deal, suggested illuminating the towers at night and turning the inside into an art space.

Vince Payne from Deal, writes: “Ever since I was little I was facinated by the cooling towers at Richbrough, it would be a shame to see them go.

“They are a landmark that can be seen for miles and they have helped me lots of times to find my way back when I am lost.”

The opposing view comes from Jeffrey Grigg, from Deal, who agrees with Mr Davis’ demolition suggestion.

He writes: “Richborough power station site is ideal for such an incinerator. Go ahead and demolish.”

Robin Ellinor, from Worth, agrees, even offering to push the demolition button.
