A new town sign will be unveiled at the Sandwich Food Fayre this weekend to mark the three towns that celebrate National Sandwich Week.
Sandwich has teamed up with Cheddar in Somerset and Bury St Edmunds, the home of Branston Pickle, to mark their historic links to the culinary snack.
Sandwich Food Fayre takes place on the Guildhall Forecourt, Market Street and St Peter’s Gardens today (Saturday) and Sunday. There will be plenty of stalls including local and global foods and treats to sample.
The mayor, Cllr Paul Graeme will reveal the new town sign in a ceremony on Sunday, at 3pm.
He said: “As a town we love celebrating National Sandwich Week and we are very proud of our historic link to the British sandwich.
“This year we are thrilled to be involved in the triple town activity which is designed to celebrate the cheese and pickle sandwich, a classic combination loved and enjoyed across the UK.”
Victoria Adams, Branston brand manager said: “I can’t imagine a better way to make National Sandwich Week special than by going back to the roots of the classic cheese and pickle sandwich.
“Triple town is a world first and is the perfect celebration to honour the natural affinity that unites the historic homelands of the much loved cheese and pickle sandwich.”
Branston Pickle will be serving free tasters from a specially designed van.
There will also be celebrations in the other two towns later in the week.
Futures for Dogs will also have a stall at the food fayre in King Street. There will be lots of nutritious doggy treats and all diets are catered for including diabetic pets, gluten and wheat free. All the money raised will pay for vet bells for the dog rescue charity's latest arrivals.
This year, the Sandwich Food Fayre is also joined by another event at The White Mill in Ash Road.
The White Mill’s Bakers, Makers and Brewers Fair will also be open from 10.30am until 5.30pm.
Baking, weaving, spinning, knitting and woodworking are among the planned stalls.
A baking competition is open to everyone and will be judged by Pieter of the Chequers Kitchen Cookery School in Deal.
On Sunday, a First World War-inspired sock blanket will be produced by artists Clare Smith, Rosie James and Linda Simon.
To coincide with this year’s National Mills Weekend theme of Mills in Art and Real Bread Maker Week, the mill is working with Dover Arts Development and artist Cathy Rogers.
The aim is to celebrate the mill’s rural heritage and the role it played in the community during the war.
