As Sandwich Quay marks its completion of flood defence work, more work begins at Gazen Salts which will see car park closures.
The new Quay will be unveiled at a ceremony on Friday, September 19.
A large anchor which was discovered by the contractors working under the Quay has been refurbished and will be unveiled as part of the ceremony, adding another historic attraction for the town.
The Environment Agency’s exhibition trailer will also be on hand to answer any questions on the scheme between 11am and 3pm.
The Sandwich Town Tidal Defence scheme is being delivered by the Environment Agency, Pfizer and Kent County Council, and representatives from each organisation will be joined by MP Laura Sandys at the ceremony.
Tommy Dolan, site head at Pfizer in Sandwich, said: “The Sandwich Quay is an important landmark and we are delighted to be part of this impressive refurbishment and to continue our support of the Tidal Defence Scheme to help protect and preserve the town and our local community.”
In October the Environment Agency will start sheet piling works at the entrance to Gazen Salts car park.
An agreement has been made with the district council to close the car park and restricted footpath access from Sunday, October 5, till Wednesday, October 15.
Pedestrians will be able to gain access to their residential properties and businesses via the existing public footpath positioned alongside Gallows Field and continuing on to the playing fields.
Pedestrian access will be available through the main entrance of the car park outside of working hours from 5pm to 7.30am but vehicles will be prohibited at all times.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We apologise in advance for the inconvenience the works may cause and would like to thank you for your cooperation and support in helping us to carry out our works as safely and efficiently as possible.”
The rest of the scheme will be completed by spring 2015.
