The elderly and disabled in Sandwich have raised concerns over tables, chairs and shop signs blocking pavements in the town.

This issue was discussed at the town council meeting last Monday, where Cllr Paul Carter said many residents have got in touch with him to say this is causing a problem for those struggling with mobility.

It was highlighted as Costa Coffee in New Street has applied to place four tables and six chairs outside its premises.

He said: “I have been petitioned by people in the town who said there are problems in the area.”

He said the zebra crossing is in the wrong place and the already narrow pavement could become cluttered with chairs.

He said: “I think we should reject this and another area should be designated.”

The council agreed that an area on the Guildhall Forecourt could be sectioned off to provide seating for Costa Coffee and the nearby Sandwich Shop. This would be on the condition that it was moved during events and the market on a Thursday.

Concerns were also raised about A-boards around the town.

The council decided to write to each business that has an advertising board to ensure each understands they require a license from Dover District Council and also to encourage them not to block walkways.
